Microfiche images were stored on small cards which weren’t bigger than a usual photograph.They have measuriment about 4-5 inches. A Slightly Relevant but Already Dated Technology with What is Microfiche

The current generation of youth may probably be most guilty of asking the question, “What is microfiche?”  Up to the mid 1990s, before the explosion of the World Wide Web and digital media, college students who did research in their university libraries, civil registrars who kept government records, museum archivists and law firm record keepers, among others, were very familiar with what microfiche is, as it was the best way of storing large volumes of documents.  Even the biggest halls cannot possibly physically house hard copies of all important and valuable documents.  Microfiche, which allowed for these documents to be stored in rolls of film, stores all these documents without using very minimal space.  This means filing cabinets that could only store a year’s worth of magazine issues, can now store a decade’s worth of the same magazine in microfiche format.

The answer to what is microfiche is simple: it is photographic film that stores documents.  Photos are taken of these documents and stored in a size that cannot actually be read by anyone.  In order to read the documents in a microfiche, one has to use a microfiche reader or viewer.  This machine is solely dedicated to magnify these images for the user to clearly read the documents’ contents.  Operating a microfiche reader does not require any special training as the user simply has to put the roll of microfiche in the part of the reader that holds it, the film will be put under a magnifying glass, and the document will be projected in the reader’s screen, fully magnified.

Should a person want to have a hard copy of the documents he or she has seen in the reader, he can print them through a special printer or copier that is connected to the microfiche reader.   However, asking what is microfiche these days would be quite dated, as only a few institutions still use it, with digital document formats proving to be more popular these days.

Is It Still Wise to Invest in a Microfiche Viewer?

The microfiche itself may look small and quite efficient as a method of storing important files and documents, but then, when you consider having to get a microfiche viewer, it would be another issue.  That’s because these machines are quite hefty and occupy a lot of space, actually equaling the space occupied by a desktop computer. Moreover, with the passage of time and the advance of technological innovations, the era of the microfiche as the best storage solution has passed, and more convenient solutions like digital scanning has become more accepted.  Moreover, more and more companies that have microfiche have also turned into converting their remaining archives to more digital formats.

Even college students who have to use microfiche in their research in the library know how huge a microfiche viewer is.  It occupies the entire area of a normal-sized desk, which causes it to be an inconvenience, as you won’t have any space left to put your other things like a pen or a notebook.  For companies, though, a viewer may be an investment, especially for those that are adamant on staying with the format and not convert into digital formats.  However, getting a viewer for microfiche is not just deemed inconvenient because it occupies too much space and is already considered by some as obsolete.

Are Microfiche Readers Still in Use?

For the younger generation who has been exposed to more technologically advanced concepts of digital scanning and mobile hard drives, microfiche readers may something they have not really heard of.  In order to know what these readers are, of course it is important first to know what microfiche is.  It is a medium of storing documents that surged in popularity in the 1970s onward, and shares a lot of qualities with microfilm.  Microfiche is a compilation of single film sheets, and in these film sheets are images of reports and other documents.  In order to read or see the contents of the documents clearly, one would need to use a reader dedicated to make the microfiche contents comprehensible.

For a time, microfiche was one of the most popular document storage system used in various institutions from the academe, business and government, because it was very cost efficient to make microfiche.  It is also very easy to use microfiche readers and the microfiche rolls themselves are convenient to store, since they do not occupy too much space, as opposed to having to store cabinets of documents.  However, the reader is another story, with its bulkiness and size.  Moreover, it needed to be properly maintained, or it would be prone to malfunctions or damage.  But despite of that, the popularity of microfiche was unchallenged until optical devices like CDs arrived, rendering it obsolete.

The Convenience that was Microfiche

Microfiche was, for decades, the main manner by which a lot of document-intensive companies and institutions kept their important files.  Libraries, law firms, government offices, and museums, among others relied on this technology to efficiently store all their documents.  A huge advantage for this method of file securing is that there is no need for a big space to store so many documents.  All documents that has to be stored in a filing cabinet with, for example, three drawers, can be stored in a single roll of fiche.  Journals, books, old newspaper issues can be stored in this very efficient manner.  Moreover, materials that are very sensitive to the elements (e.g. historical documents that are sensitive to moisture and light) can be made public with their equivalents in film.

With the last point, the significance of microfiche becomes more obvious.  For example, historical documents that are usually just disposable to the public’s perception, like newspapers can be have their film equivalents and end up as long as they can, while the actual print has long crumbled.  Government documents, especially birth and death certificates and contracts, were stored in this format before the huge digital revolution came.

The death of this technology came when digital media imposed on everyone that “soft copies” of documents would now be stored in discs and removable hard drives.  But then, optical and digital devices also have their own drawbacks.  For example, CDs are also susceptible to overuse and heat, which can compromise their performance.  Given that, documents in digital formats are more convenient in the sense that they can be easily copied and transferred via email and other means.  Moreover, they can be easily indexed and searched.  Of course, these digital documents can be viewed in any computer, unlike microfiche that requires the use of a reader that doesn’t have any other purpose but be a tool for documents to be seen.
